Compatibility Checks

When purchasing a SIM Card / eSIM from our product range, it’s important to ensure that your device meets our compatibility requirements.

The compatibility requirements can vary depending on the product type and so please refer to the information below –

For compatibility with our Physical Voice+Data SIM Cards, please ensure that your device meets the requirements below –

  • Your smart phone handset must be fully unlocked to accept SIM cards from alternative service providers.

  • The device must also support the 4G Band 1 – 2100MHz frequency and (for the best possible coverage) we would recommend choosing a device that also supports 4G Band 3 and 4G Band 8 as mentioned here: Frequency Guide

  • The Softbank network no longer offers 3G network coverage and so if you require the ability to place / receive standard phone calls, your device must support the VoLTE feature. Based on our investigations, we believe the device may also need to support at least the Android 12 OS (if you intend to use an Android device).

Unfortunately however, we have also found that some VoLTE capable handsets are just not compatible with the VoLTE service provided by the Softbank network. We would therefore recommend that you avoid using any of the devices mentioned (in the “Compatibility Checks” section) at the following link: VoLTE Issue Guide

Please be advised that we have not had the opportunity to test all handset types and so there may be incompatible devices that are not yet listed here.

  • You can also review a list of handsets that Softbank has tested here (you may need to translate this page through a browser such as Chrome) to check if they report the device is compatible for calls, texts and data. This link is not directly related to our service (as this list is for devices and SIM cards purchased directly from Softbank) but this can be used as a general guide when deciding on a device (in addition to checking the device meets all other requirements mentioned above).

  • Your smart phone handset must be eSIM compatible and you can check this on most devices by dialing: *#06#

If a 32 digit “EID” number is displayed on the next screen, this would indicate that your device is suitable for use. Alternatively, you may be able to locate the EID by going to Settings > General > About > EID (on most iPhone handsets) or by going to Settings > About Phone > Status Information > EID (on most Android handsets).

Please be advised that your handset must be an actual eSIM compatible device with built-in eSIM functionality. For example, our eSIMs are not compatible with products such as “esim.me” that allow you to install eSIMs on devices that were not originally eSIM compatible.

  • The device must be fully unlocked to accept eSIMs from alternative service providers. If you are not sure if your device is unlocked, you may wish to check this with your previous service provider / the original retailer you purchased the device from.

  • To access the Docomo 3G/4G network, your device must also support the 3G Band 1 – 2100MHz / 4G Band 1 – 2100MHz frequencies and (for the best possible coverage) we would recommend choosing a device that also supports the additional frequencies mentioned here: Frequency Guide
