How To Place Calls

When using a Voice+Data SIM / eSIM to place an outbound call, it is important that you use the correct dialing procedure.

*If you have purchased a Data-Only SIM / eSIM, you will not be assigned a phone number or be able to place / receive standard calls. If you need access to a Japanese phone number or the calling feature, you would require a Voice+Data SIM / eSIM instead.

The dialing instructions vary when placing a call to a local phone number (i.e. to another Japanese phone number) or to an international phone number and so please refer to the relevant guides below –

You have been assigned a Japanese phone number and so when you are placing a call to another Japanese phone number, simply enter the standard phone number (including the leading zero and the area code).

If you are using a physical Voice+Data SIM card and you are unable to place a call (and you have confirmed that you are using the correct dialing procedure), please check that your device supports VoLTE and ensure the VoLTE feature is enabled. If any issues persist however, please visit the following link: VoLTE Troubleshooting Guide

To call an international phone number, please use the prefix of: 0063

The 0063 prefix would then be followed by the Country Code (of the country you are calling to) and then you would enter the Area Code (with the leading zero removed if there is one) and Phone Number.

0063 > Country Code > Area Code (with leading zero removed) > Phone Number

We provide a list of country codes at the following link: Country Codes

0063 Prefix:
When using a physical Voice+Data SIM Card, international calls can be placed using the standard dialing procedure (by entering a “+” symbol followed by the country code, area code and phone number) instead of the 0063 prefix.
If you use this method however, calls will be chargeable at an increased rate (please check the Usage Rates link for additional information) and so to keep costs down, we would always recommend using the 0063 prefix for international calls.

VoLTE:
If you are using a physical Voice+Data SIM Card and you are unable to place a call (and you have confirmed that you are using the correct dialing procedure), please check that your device supports VoLTE and ensure the VoLTE feature is enabled on your device. If any issues persist however, please visit the following link: VoLTE Troubleshooting Guide
