What’s an “eSIM Access Code”?

If you have purchased a Voice+Data eSIM, will require an “eSIM Access Code” in order to complete the activation process.

The “eSIM Access Code” is an 8 character code that will be shipped to you (if you have selected our delivery option) or handed to you at a Mobal Pick-Up point in Japan (if you have selected the collection option).

Along with your device’s EID (more information on EID’s can be found here), the access code will allow you to go through the activation process by following the instructions found here: Activation Guide

Why is it necessary?

Japan has strict regulations that apply to any voice capable SIM / eSIM services and so even when purchasing our digital Voice+Data eSIM product, we are still required to verify your identity.

When selecting our delivery option, you will be asked to upload a specific form of I.D. (full details will be provided during the checkout process) after placing your order. The I.D. that you provide must be valid and it must display both your name and the same address that you have provided as the delivery address. We would then ship you a document containing an “eSIM Access Code” which will allow us to verify your identity / your address and allow you to complete the activation process.

If you have selected our collection option however, you will be able to verify your identity by showing the collection point agent your Passport and your Mobal Order Confirmation (so an I.D. upload would not be required for this option).

Why don’t other providers do this?

You may be wondering why some other providers don’t ask for your I.D. and this could be because they are offering a Data-Only product (this restriction does not apply to our Data-Only products either) or because they are offering you a service that will not provide you with a real Japanese phone number.

The rules that are in place are due to Japanese regulations that are entirely outside of our control but we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause!

Other options?

If you’re in a hurry but still require a voice capable eSIM service, you can select the “Pick-Up (Free)” option during the checkout process and retrieve the “eSIM Access Code” from one of our collection points instead.

You would then be able to collect the access code upon arrival (by showing the collection point agent your Passport and your Order Confirmation) and go through the activation process whenever you’re ready.

Alternatively (if you do not require a Japanese phone number or the ability to call / text), you could purchase a Mobal Data-Only eSIM service instead. The I.D. restrictions mentioned above do not apply to our Data-Only products and so we can send you the eSIM details via email (usually within 15 minutes of you placing the order).
